Sony has officially confirmed the highly anticipated PlayStation 5 Slim, set to launch during the upcoming holiday season. This redesigned PS5 boasts a smaller form factor and an increased storage capacity of 1TB for both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition. This is a significant upgrade from the 825GB storage in the original console versions.
Additionally, the new model offers the option to incorporate an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for the PS5 Digital Edition.In a statement on the PlayStation Blog, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications, emphasized that Sony’s objective with this new PS5 is to cater to the evolving needs of gamers. Shuman further highlighted the collaboration between engineering and design teams to introduce this new form factor, offering players more choices and flexibility.
This compact design retains the outstanding technology features that make the PS5 an exceptional gaming experience, all while including an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for expanded internal storage.
One of the notable improvements in this PS5 Slim is its reduced volume, with a decrease of over 30%, and weight reduction by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. It features four distinct cover panels, with a glossy top portion and a matte finish at the bottom. For those opting for the PS5 Digital Edition, the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for the PS5 can be added separately for $79.99 | €119.99 | £99.99 | 11,980 JPY.
The new PS5 model is slated for release starting this November in the United States at select local retailers and direct.playstation.com where available, with a global rollout to follow in subsequent months.
